Military Institute
(VMI) Final
Score: 17 - 43 @ VMI
VMI came out strong and vengeful as they looked
to avenge their heartbreaking lost last year in front of their home
crowd. W&L was without a number of starters, including flanker
Chad Lewis '05 and Centre Mark Woodward '05. Again a handling
mistake led to a quick opening try for VMI. Angered by this
embarrassing amateur mistake, the young Minks fought back ferociously
and equalized the score quickly. After a VMI turned over W&L
marched on with crisp forward runs and were able to get to the goal
line. With the goal posts just a breathe away, the forwards
picked up their game when they needed and 8th Man Tino Tovo '07 dived
in for the score. The game was marred by many unnecessary
penalties including arguing with referee and offsides. VMI were
able to take the lead, including a effortless tap-in try off a
penalty, thanks to a litany of juvenile penalties. Also, W&L
were overpowered in the scrums once again while backline defense was
sub-par. Yet, the Minks generated enough points to keep the game at
bay.
In the second half, VMI, paced by the boot of
their fullback and a consistent forward attack, were able to pull away
with 15 minutes left. Co-captain George Craft '05 left the game
after playing through a mild-concussion while President Rory Dowling
'05 came off to rest his shoulders as the game was getting out of
hand. Freshman players filled in admirably, as winger George
Purrington scored a sensational end to end try all on his own.
Flankers Chris Dadak, Mark Howell and winger Riddick Bebe all
displayed flashes of brilliance as they looked to more playing time
next year. VMI closed the game out with a commanding 17 - 43
blowout. Coach Lovell had a few encouraging words for the team
after the game as he commended the players for their intensity and
desire.
